What is love? It is a powerful thing that most people spend their whole lives trying to obtain. It is what drives people insane to the point where death seems more inviting than living a life without it. Everyone secretly wants some form of love, whether they’d like to admit it or not. Today, the true meaning of the word “love” is slowly depreciating into a slang word used in everyday vernacular. People throw the word around, using it synonymously with words with less powerful meaning such as “like” or “enjoy.” Love is serious, and shouldn’t be toyed with.
“The heavens forbid,
But that our loves and comforts should increase,
Even as our days do grow.”
Recently, I read this quote from Othello and of course, being the hopeless romantic that I am, my heart jumped and I melted a bit inside. Not literally of course, but I got that warm fuzzy feeling. You know that feeling? On a cold winter night or morning, whichever you like better, you sit down and you slowly slip your cup of warm hot chocolate, and you can feel the warmth just rushing throughout your body? Well that’s how I felt. For all you taken people out there, don’t you get a similar feeling when you’re with your love? Don’t you just love that warm fuzzy feeling you get when you’re with them? Well that’s what I want in life, a love that grows stronger by the day, just like Desdemona and Othello in the story…well, so far. They may not know what is going on around them, but hey, at least they’re happy with each other!
After reading this quote, I almost immediately thought of the movie Up. I felt the first scene between Ellie and Carl perfectly depicted this quote. Below is the video, I don’t want to spoil anything for anyone so please do watch it before you read on, or if you’ve already watched it, you can skip it. But let’s be honest, who doesn’t want to watch this little clip. Disney movies give off this vibe of happiness and lightheartedness. It makes you feel like a child once again and for just a moment, you remember that innocence and forget all the troubles that have accumulated since that time period. So sit back, relax, and enjoy!
As shown in the video, what Ellie and Carl shared was true love. Through thick and thin, they stayed together, and even after Ellie was gone, Carl never stopped thinking about her. I applaud Pixar for coming up with this scene, in just five minutes, they created one of the greatest love stories ever told. I like the fact that there was very little to no dialogue, which leaves the clip up to many other interpretations as well, it gets the audience to come up with their own little stories in their heads. So after watching that video, what is your interpretation of Ellie and Carl’s love?
